Parent company of https://t.co/LyX0EVMxAw - data-value-as-a-service. Tech tweets by founder @lalleal were retweeted here, but @lalleal is now on Mastodon instead.mapflat.com Stockholm, SwedenJoined August 2017
Twitter has been really valuable for me in several ways. But I detest fascism and techbroism, so I aim to do social networking at mastodon and LinkedIn instead. Find me at social.linux.pizza/@lalle and linkedin.com/in/larsalberts…
Simple method for evaluating a method:
The method prescribes ..
doing more things. - Unlikely to improve your work.
doing things in another order. - Might improve your work.
doing less things. - Will probably improve your work.
Is there an AWS IAM structure best practice? How to organise users/groups/roles/policies to scale beyond a few teams? AFAIK, every tactic leads to the great wall of static limits. Is there anyone out there with better IAM fu?
@Schzauzenfraude I don't believe methods that ask teams to do extra things and/or slow down will be long-term successful. RUP is one example. Agile, Lean, XP, DevOps, DataOps, trunk-based are all philosophies focused on cutting away unnecessary waste to make teams move faster. They will prevail.
@Schzauzenfraude Speed is what matters on the bottom line. Communication is a means to speed, not a goal. Teams can and should move at a pace where the meaning of a single field is an implementation detail that they can rush past without fear.
Unpopular opinion (?): Data contracts is a poor substitute for holistic testing.
With sufficient automated test coverage to detect whether an upstream change breaks downstream applications, you can avoid data contract bureaucracy. It is a social solution for technical debt.
Finally got around to reading this piece on data contracts, which I think I saw @josh_wills post on LI, and it is 🔥🔥🔥
Maybe I've been out of the data space for too long, but this "controversy" was new to me.

This piece of art is taking a good concept too far, but it is a good illustration of the power of unix philosophy.
Companies with a culture of solving their needs like this, without waste, run in circles around those that seek a "proper" enterprisy solution to everything.
@mikiobraun Indeed. Joel was right.
IMHO, they are unnecessary. We use streamlit+bokeh for the notebook use cases. If a particular app is useful enough, it is already deployable. One system less to manage.
The modern internet based global economy was not created by capitalism.
It is almost entirely built on foundations laid by unpaid volunteers contributing to open source because doing so made them feel good.
"Authorities penalized families over a mere suspicion of fraud based on the system’s risk indicators. Tens of thousands of families — often with lower incomes or belonging to ethnic minorities — were pushed into poverty"

"Scan this QR code / click this link to cancel your doctor's appointment."
I watched a team make the mistake of crawling unknown links that appeared on a closed channel. Some could very well have been really important for users (not to click).
Don't visit other people's links.

It seems I forgot to monitor the video release for this presentation. Available since long: youtu.be/n3nV6oHNqVE
It's my first presentation on the subject, and I had too much (new) content for the time allocated. Will learn and improve until next time.
Thx for everything, @cutting. I and many more built careers on your work. I am eternally grateful
Of all computer systems ever built in 🇸🇪, I believe that @Spotify's Hadoop cluster is the single system that generated the most user value. S wouldn't have been a tech leader w/o it
This launch reward culture was present already in 2007, when I joined Google.
You get what you measure. G incentivises abandoning products and creating redundant variants (Allo,..)
Ironically, it's a violation of their own principle "Focus on the user, and all else will follow"
I wonder how much CO2 we are emitting by using python for data, instead of compiled languages. Anyone has numbers that might give a clue?
We observed ~5-10x performance when moving Spotify from python MR to Crunch/Scalding. But some gain was due to excessive serialisation.
