Why should you read the Odyssey in 2026? Because it is not just an ancient poem — it is "our story." Homer's epic opens with a single word: "man." From that moment, Odysseus becomes every one of us: wrestling with fate and free will, clinging to the sacred idea of home, choosing his humanity over divine immortality, and learning what the gods will demand of him to rectify the injustice that consumes his house. This isn't dusty literature (nor something malleable to modern man's ideologies). It's the fountainhead of Western civilization, the poetic training ground for Plato, and a surprising preparation for the coming of the Christ. No one is ever interested in the thing I find most interesting about Substack: how the model reduces the scales needed for a variety of important outcomes (sustainable livelihoods, persistent communities, achievable cadences of publishing, etc.). Because I think scale brings evils of many kinds to individuals and cultures, much of what excites me about Substack is this. Reply Rules are sensible in exactly this context. I wanted to call them “House Rules,” because almost no one disputes that within your house, your rules should obtain. What rules a city, or a state, or a country should have are matters of much dispute; how much variation should be allowed by the powers which, in a certain sense, “own” these spaces is too. But most of us accept that within the “little” environments we call private, it’s perfectly reasonable and even salutary for individuals and communities to develop their own rules (and to expect them to be observed). And our platform is oriented around those environments, around the many Substacks where unique scenes can fully flourish and where people can be as real and inimitably themselves as they want, without being warped by massive shared spaces in which only a handful of types of dynamics dominate. The other thing I find exciting about Reply Rules is how they make use of LLM technology. They’re an ideal case for it, since everything can be undone / is non-binding, and every action teaches the LLM more, and the outcomes are relatively lower-stakes than, say, anything to do with medical outcomes, or money, or vehicle control, etc. Since I started working on platforms, one of the persistent realities has been that 1. people want control; but 2. people do not want controls. The system powering Reply Rules lets you write whatever rules you want in your own voice, and by observing them and your own moderation actions, it attempts to “do as you’d do.” You needn’t fiddle with 10,000 dials or buttons, adjust hundreds of sliders, or even form a mental map of categories or concepts of “moderation” as traditionally conceived. You can just say what you want, do what you want, and it’ll adapt. I’m sure there will be all kinds of snags and problems, but I hope it makes it easier for everyone to feel a measure of control over their own space and experience without restricting anyone’s freedom or creativity in general. We’ll see, of course, but that was the hope! (Note by the way that this is optional! You don’t have to use this, now or ever; feel free to tell the clankers to pound sand!).
