I have also raised these concerns before. Palantir has a history of offering free "trial periods" for their products before going on to be directly awarded public-sector contracts. As part of his Developed Vetting, Peter Mandelson was only required to declare foreign contacts with whom he had "CURRENT or recent contact". A key question for Government: does that mean Mandelson did not make clear his previous contact with Russians, such as Oleg Deripaska, or his Chinese business links? There are also concerns about what is not in these releases. For example, many ministers have provided their WhatsApp messages. Others have not released their messages. This goes to the heart of why we must ban ministers from conducting official business on private devices and through non-secure systems such as WhatsApp, where messages can be set to self-delete. Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee raised this very issue in May.

This case strikes me as extraordinary, both for the police behaviour and judge's apparent direction to the jury. Carrying an 8" knife is illegal with very limited exceptions which do not include "self defence". The Criminal Justice Act makes that plain, and the Sentencing Council says in terms "carrying a knife or other weapon for protection is not a lawful reason. " The Attorney General should be reviewing both this case and the case of the two teenage rapists ASAP. I don't know what is happening with our justice system at the moment, and I am not alone in that concern. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

I've just read an extraordinary piece by Lee Cain, former Director of Communications to Boris Johnson, in Conservative Home today. Unfortunately, thinking in politics these days is based on the opinion polls of the day. We often forget that the only poll that matters is the one three years from now. When Boris left office, he left a Conservative Party that nearly 70 per cent of the public thought was untrustworthy and a similar proportion felt was incompetent. This is the mindset that Kemi now has to change. Condemning and attacking her strategy halfway through does nothing to help that.

Plans to use artificial intelligence to create court transcripts are a welcome step to ensure the transparency of justice. As it stands, courts charge huge sums of money for access to court transcripts. When I asked for a transcript for a major trial, Manchester Crown Court told me it was £100,000 – when I pressed them, it went down to £9,000, but it’s still way beyond reach for most. In other countries, these can be accessed entirely free of charge. We should do the same and make them freely accessible in a similar way as we have with Hansard. thejusticegap.com/government-pla…

The Government is potentially in contempt of Parliament. By failing to publish unredacted documents, they are failing to abide by the Humble Address on Lord Mandelson's appointment as our Ambassador to the US. This is unacceptable, and unless the Government stops the obfuscation, I will raise the matter as a matter of contempt. I reminded the House that the now PM, Keir Starmer, established a precedent for this in December 2018, when he secured a motion holding the then-Government in contempt.
