@trocken_nick Yes, they’re great for amplifiers. Early ones had a rather limited frequency response but later ones were fine.
The 2N3055: The Transistor That Built an Era (and Still Goes On) If you’ve ever opened up a vintage hi-fi amplifier, a 1970s laboratory power supply, or an early industrial motor controller, you’ve almost certainly seen it: the iconic, silver TO-3 metal "top hat." Introduced by RCA in the early 1960s, the 2N3055 silicon NPN power transistor is arguably the most famous, reliable, and omnipresent transistor ever manufactured. Decades after its debut, it remains a staple in the electronics world. Here is a look at why this component became an absolute legend: A Quick History Before the 2N3055, power electronics heavily relied on germanium transistors, which were notoriously sensitive to thermal runaway, they could not handle much power, and they were expensive. RCA changed the game by utilizing silicon. Initially built using a rugged hometaxial process, it was seemed indestructible under heavy loads, it handle more power than the previous germanium transistors and it broke the sub-$1 barrier. Later, manufacturers transitioned to the more cost effective epitaxial-base processes and this also improved speed and efficiency. It quickly became the industry standard, manufactured by everyone from Motorola (ON Semi) to STMicroelectronics. The Basic Performance (The Workhorse Stats) The 2N3055 wasn't built to be fast or elegant; it was built to handle raw abuse. * Collector-Emitter Voltage (VCEO): 60V (perfect for standard audio and power rails) * Continuous Collector Current (IC): 15A * Total Power Dissipation (PD): 115W (when properly bolted to a hefty heatsink) * Frequency (fT): Around 2.5 MHz for the epitaxial version, but not quoted for the hometaxial version. Current Usage: Where is it today? While modern designers swear by efficient switching MOSFETs and high-speed IGBTs for new commercial products, the 2N3055 is far from retired: 1. Linear Power Supplies: Because it behaves beautifully in its linear region, it’s still the go-to choice for DIY bench power supplies where low noise is critical. 2. Audio Restoration & Boutique Amps: Audiophiles still prize the warm, classic clipping characteristics of 2N3055-driven output stages. 3. Education & Prototyping: It is the quintessential teaching tool. Its physical size makes it easy to mount, probe, and—crucially—it can survive the inevitable wiring mistakes made by engineering students. The 2N3055 proves that in engineering, reliability and simplicity often outlast cutting-edge innovation. 👉 What was your first project using a 2N3055? Have you used one recently, or have you fully migrated to plastic TO-220s and surface-mount components? Let’s reminisce in the comments! More information available in a link to my website in the comments. 👇 #ElectronicsEngineering #HardwareDesign #VintageTech #ElectricalEngineering #Innovation #EmbeddedSystems #RetroElectronics
@titojff Oh yes, many have done that. I’m going to chop the top off one for a video I’m starting to make.
@keesdvdv I think there’s a longer explanation on my website - check my link in the comments.
Why the "Differential Amplifier" is the Hero of Modern Electronics If you’ve ever looked at the internal schematic of an Operational Amplifier (Op-Amp), you’ve seen it: the Transistor Differential Amplifier, also known as the Long-Tailed Pair (LTP). But why is this specific configuration so critical to analog design? Derived from the brilliant work of Alan Blumlein in the 1930s, the LTP transitioned from vacuum tubes to transistors to become the fundamental building block of high-performance amplifiers. Here’s why it’s a design "must-know": 🔹 Differential Gain vs. Common Mode Rejection: The circuit’s superpower is its ability to amplify the difference between two signals while ignoring noise that is common to both. This is quantified by the Common Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR). High CMRR is the reason your audio and data cables can run through noisy environments without losing signal integrity. 🔹 The "Long Tail" Secret: The performance of the circuit relies on the "tail" resistor (or constant current source) connected to the emitters. The higher the impedance of this tail, the better the balance and the higher the CMRR. In ICs this is typically replaced by an active current source for better performance. 🔹 Symmetry is King: Because the circuit uses two matched transistors, it is inherently stable against temperature fluctuations. If the temperature rises, both transistors are affected equally, keeping the output balanced. From precision instrumentation to high-fidelity audio and integrated circuits, the Long-Tailed Pair remains as relevant today as it was 80 years ago. What are your experiences with this circuit? Let me know in the comments. Check out the link in the comments for more information. #ElectronicsEngineering #AnalogDesign #CircuitDesign #Transistors #ElectricalEngineering #TechHistory #electronicsnotes
@jcano88184 Yes, the Superhet was and still is a great technique.
Have you ever wondered how your radio selects a single station out of thousands of signals being transmitted? Early radios (like TRF receivers) struggled hard with this. Tune into one station, and you’d often hear another overlapping it. The fix? A stroke of genius called the Superheterodyne (Superhet) receiver. Here is how this game-changing tech revolutionized wireless communication. 👇 (1/4) #superhet #superheterodyne #radio #radiotechnology #hamradio #amateurradio #hamr #electronicsnotes
@CatAsphyxiant CMRR - yeah - it’s important!
@WillianBR Good luck - hope it’s an easy fix.
Don't Fear the Repair: A Systematic Guide to Fixing Gadgets and Radios We’ve all been there: you pick up a beloved piece of kit—a vintage radio or a reliable gadget—and it suddenly refuses to work. The instinct is often to assume the worst, like a blown processor or a dead circuit board. But here is the golden rule of electronics: Check the obvious first. In my experience, roughly 75% of "broken" electronics aren't dead; they are just suffering from simple, mechanical, or environmental issues that anyone can fix with a bit of patience. Before you consider sending a device to the landfill, take a moment to look for these common "easy wins": * Leaked Batteries: Alkaline battery corrosion is a classic. A quick clean with a soft brush and a touch of dilute lemon juice to neutralize the residue can often bring a device back to life instantly. * Dirty Contacts & Switches: Oxidation is the enemy of reliability. Whether it’s a scratchy volume pot or a rotary switch in an old radio, a little switch cleaner or even a gentle pass with some paper can restore a solid connection. * Loose Connections: Dropped a device? A loose speaker wire or a detached battery terminal is a common culprit. A simple soldering touch-up is often all that’s needed. * Power Supply Issues: Don't blame the device until you’ve verified the power! Check your leads and adapters first—it’s amazing how many "broken" units are just victims of a frayed cable. Repairing gadgets isn't just about saving money; it’s about reclaiming control, reducing waste, and understanding the technology we use every day. Don't let the fear of complex circuits stop you from troubleshooting the basics. Want to sharpen your fault-finding skills? I’ve put together a systematic guide to help you work through the most likely faults, saving you time and frustration. 👉 Read the full guide in the linking the comments. What’s the most satisfying repair you’ve ever completed? Share your "easy fix" wins in the comments! 👇 #ElectronicsRepair #DIY #HardwareEngineering #FaultFinding #VintageElectronics #Sustainability
@thrustermaster Yes, We’ve come to rely on them.

Unlock the Secrets of SCR or Thyristor Circuit Design Have you ever wondered how to control high power with low power signals? Thyristors, or SCRs (Silicon Controlled Rectifiers) as they are called could be key. Here's a primer from @electronicsnotes: 🔹 Understanding Thyristors: These are essentially switches that can control high currents with a small gate signal. Once triggered, they stay on until the current falls below a holding level or is manually reset. 🔹 Basic SCR Operation: An SCR has three pins - Anode, Cathode, and Gate. When a positive voltage is applied to the Anode relative to the Cathode, and a brief pulse to the Gate, the SCR turns on, acting like a closed switch. 🔹 Circuit Design Basics - Triggering: Use a small current to control a larger one. Common methods include using a capacitor discharge or a pulse from a microcontroller. - Snubber Networks: To protect against false triggering due to noise or transients, snubber circuits (resistor-capacitor) are crucial. - Commutation: Turning off an SCR isn't just about removing the gate signal. You might need to reduce current below the holding value or use forced commutation circuits. 🔹 Applications - Power Control: Use in AC phase control for devices like dimmers or motor speed control. - Crowbar Circuits: For overvoltage protection, an SCR can short the power supply to ground, blowing a fuse, thus saving sensitive equipment. - Switching: High-frequency switching for power supplies, battery chargers, etc. 🔹 Design Considerations - Thermal Management: SCRs can handle high power but dissipate heat. Proper heatsinking is a must. - Noise Immunity: Ensure your design accounts for EMI; isolation and grounding techniques are vital. - Reliability: Choose components wisely; high current capability doesn't mean neglect in selection for long-term reliability. 🔹 Testing and Safety: Always test your circuits with safety in mind. High voltages and currents are involved, so use proper isolation and protective gear. What are your experiences with designing with these electronic components? For more information check out the link in the comments. #thyristor #scr #siliconcontrolledrectifier #circuitdesign #HardwareDesign #electroniccomponents #electronicsnotes
That’s a good question - I think there is so much we don’t know yet. AI is still in its infancy and everyone is trying to see what and isn’t acceptable. I’m trying to use the new technology responsibly - I need to keep up. AI has resulted in my traffic falling significantly. If I am to keep going I need to use the tools that are available. I think it is all about responsible use. Use the tools but make sure you have a good human input. I for one use AI but I don’t want to create AI slop, so I try to make sure there is real engineering insight gained from experience in all I do.

Thank you for your response. I do use AI to help summarise articles I have written manually. The responses are edited to try to ensure the best offering. Being a one man operation I use the best tools I have to provide a free service to as many people as possible. After all we are in technology, so should we not use the tools available? Very many people appreciate the posts, finding them informative and interesting and I regularly receive positive feedback about them. If I didn’t use productivity tools then this free service would either not exist or it would have to be paid for. Most people who encounter the site are surprised at how much is done for a one man operation. They certainly do not say I’m lazy! So you can use the free access to my years of experience as an engineer, or not. The choice is yours.

How does that frequency shift actually happen? Through a process called heterodyning: * The Local Oscillator (LO): The radio generates its own internal steady signal. * The Mixer: The incoming radio signal and the LO signal are fed into a mixer. * The Result: The mixer outputs the difference between the two frequencies—the perfectly stable IF signal. Once it's at the IF stage, sharp filters strip away all the unwanted noise and adjacent stations, leaving you with crystal-clear audio. 👇 (3/4)
