Over two days of discussion, councilors considered more than 40 amendments to the budget proposed by Mayor Keith Wilson—often sparking passionate debate. Many proposed amendments resulted in 6-6 ties, falling one vote short of the seven required to pass. "Today was long and contentious, but I'm grateful for my colleagues who show up every day, committed to make Portland better," said Council President Jamie Dunphy, a District 1 councilor who represents East Portland. "Onward to the next phase." The budget now goes to the Tax Supervising and Conservation Commission for legal review. The council can make further adjustments to the approved budget after that, so long as the change to any individual fund does not exceed 10%. In June, the council will formally adopt the budget so it's ready to take effect on July 1—when the new fiscal year begins. A collapsed parking garage. A survivor trapped under tons of concrete. No way in. No way out. Firefighters arrive on scene. The clock is ticking. Portland Fire & Rescue conducted a training drill last month to prepare for this dramatic scenario, teaming up with trauma surgeons at Oregon Health and Science University and an ambulance crew from American Medical Response. The drill, hosted at Portland Fire's training campus in NE Portland, required the teams to work in close coordination, using all their skill and ingenuity to perform a successful rescue. 🌡️ ☀️ It’s #NationalHeatSafetyWeek! This year marks the five year anniversary of the 2021 Pacific Northwest Heat Dome. In the last week of June of that year, record temperatures climbed from 95° to 108° to 112° to 116° in Portland over four days. In Multnomah County, 69 lives were lost due to heat during the Heat Dome. In the entire Pacific Northwest up through Washington and British Columbia, 914 deaths were confirmed. Estimates are as high as 1400. #Heat earlier in the season is more dangerous because we aren’t used to it. 🧊 Now is the time to start thinking about how to stay cool this summer. We were thrilled to join @cpahoregon last week to celebrate the groundbreaking of Jamii Court, a new project bringing 96 affordable homes to West Portland Park, including 47 family-sized units and 89 units at lower affordability levels for households in need.

The Portland Bureau of Emergency Management (PBEM) plays a vital coordination role in all hazards. During extreme weather, PBEM works with partner agencies to quickly assess needs, solve problems and share preparedness information with the public, including members of multilingual communities. PBEM’s trained Neighborhood Emergency Team (NET) volunteers work with first responders and Portland Permitting & Development to serve the community’s biggest needs before, during and after disasters. This includes clearing storm drains, reporting damage, staffing shelters, maintaining a perimeter around downed power lines, checking on neighbors, dispatching rides to warming centers and supporting the City’s Emergency Operations Center. When a home or business owner, or their builder or architect, seeks a permit, plan reviewers study the building plans carefully to ensure they meet requirements for safety. These include adequate exits in case of a fire; structural standards, including those for seismic resilience; and making sure the electrical, plumbing and heating and cooling systems work safely. HomeShare Oregon, a trusted local non-profit, is now a qualified provider for the City's Home Sharing Pilot Program. Interested homeowners can sign up to list a room in their home through HomeShare Oregon, who will work to vet potential tenants, facilitate a good match, and help both homeowner and tenant through the early stages of home sharing. People seeking housing can also sign up using HomeShare Oregon. Those seeking a room might be graduate students, someone who is recently widowed, professionals who have to move to Portland for work, or other people you may know from your daily life. Homeowners benefit from supplemental income, company at home, and the support of experienced HomeShare Oregon staff.
