NO WORLD CUP FOR EMPIRE Prominent human rights activist and Black Agenda Report editor Ajamu Baraka has delivered a scathing indictment of the United States as the host of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, arguing that a nation “at war with its own citizens, potentially at war with visitors” should be disqualified from hosting the global tournament. “FIFA is so fixated on the possibility of making some money that they are violating their own standards,” Baraka said. Baraka warned that the US is “prepared to violate the rights of all non-European people who may be visitors,” with ICE immigration enforcement potentially targeting fans who “look like [they] don’t belong” or speak another language. He stated that “Racial profiling… is now legal. You can be stopped and asked for your papers, like in South Africa”. The most sustained boycott movement has emerged from Africa. Al Jazeera published an opinion piece by columnist Tafi Mhaka declaring “Africa must boycott the 2026 World Cup,” drawing a direct parallel to the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where 22 African nations withdrew to protest New Zealand’s sporting ties with apartheid South Africa. African fan associations point to US immigration enforcement under ICE, warning that visitors who “look foreign” could be questioned or detained. Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali has stated that “fundamentally the conditions for participation do not exist” for the Iranian team, citing the US-Israeli war of aggression that began on 28 February. Trump has warned that the Iranian team’s “life and safety” would be at risk if it participated. Amnesty International has warned that “the 2026 World Cup threatens to deliver more repression than football,” with US immigration raids threatening to make the tournament “a symbol of state intimidation”. FIFA leadership is reportedly considering requesting that Trump halt ICE enforcement entirely during the tournament.
