Nothing screams ignorance and racism against Cubans quite like some of the so-called conservatives here in Collier County spreading these brain-dead rumors that the Cuban flag is communist. Bless your heart, or whatever is left of it after dodging actual history. Let’s fix that with a lesson the 1840s apparently never reached your circle. The Cuban Lone Star flag was designed in 1849 by Narciso López and poet Miguel Teurbe Tolón. Three blue stripes for the island’s three provinces. White stripes for the purity of the brutal independence fight against Spain. The red triangle? Blood, strength, sacrifice, and straight-up French Revolutionary fire: liberty, equality, fraternity. That lone white star? Pure hope and independence, a defiant light against colonial darkness. This flag flew in real liberation battles decades before Marx scribbled his nonsense and long before Castro hijacked a revolution into a prison state. When Cuba finally shed Spain in 1902, this was the banner hoisted in victory. It is the exact same one proud Cuban exiles and their families wave today while protesting the tyranny that stole their homeland. Even the communists squatting in Havana had the sense not to scrap it for their lame hammer-and-sickle knockoffs. They know the truth every informed person does: this is the flag of Cuba libre, not the regime that perverts it. Confusing the national emblem with the 26th of July Movement’s red-and-black propaganda rag is not just sloppy. It is embarrassingly ignorant rumor-mongering that makes everything harder for actual anti-communist work. Painting freedom-loving Cubans as somehow tainted while claiming any kind of authority on the matter? That is not bold conservatism. It’s actually extreme ignorance. Next time, try asking real Cubans instead of recycling folklore in your echo chamber. But of course if your biases run so deep that you cannot even engage with them, perhaps conduct your own honest historical inquiry first, honey. You might discover what the flag actually represents before presuming to lecture others on the subject.
