The Economic Singularity: Raoul Pal’s Case for AI, Crypto, and Long-Term Conviction In this episode of When Shift Happens, I sit down with @RaoulGMI, co-founder of @RealVision, to discuss what he believes is the biggest capital event in human history. While the conversation touches on Bitcoin, Ethereum, NFTs, and crypto markets, the deeper discussion is about something much larger: the accelerating race for artificial intelligence and the profound economic transformation it could trigger. Raoul argues that we are entering an era where intelligence itself becomes the world's most valuable resource, and understanding that shift may be the most important investment decision of our lifetime. The Biggest Race Humanity Has Ever Entered Many investors still think of AI as another technology trend, comparable to the internet or smartphones, but Raoul sees it differently. His view is that AI has become a geopolitical necessity because the United States cannot afford to lose the AI race to China, and vice versa. The world's largest corporations cannot afford to fall behind competitors that possess more powerful intelligence systems. As a result, capital is being funnelled into AI infrastructure at a scale never seen before. "This whole funneling of all capital into intelligence is the biggest race that's ever happened," Raoul explains. Unlike previous booms, he believes this one cannot simply be switched off because Governments, corporations, and investors all have incentives to continue funding intelligence development. Even if individual companies fail, the assets, talent, and computing power remain too valuable to abandon. The foundation of his investment thesis is that the race itself matters more than any single company participating in it. Understanding the Economic Singularity The most fascinating idea in the conversation is what Raoul calls the economic singularity. Traditionally, economic growth has been constrained by human beings. More workers generally meant more productivity, with population and productivity growth largely determining the size of economies. AI changes that equation. For the first time, intelligence can be created and scaled independently of human population growth. Instead of billions of human workers, future economies could contain billions of AI agents and robots performing tasks, creating businesses, managing resources, and making economic decisions. Raoul points to recent research suggesting that AI systems are already producing extraordinary amounts of output. The implications are difficult to comprehend because no previous economic model was designed for a world where productive intelligence can scale almost infinitely. "The economic singularity is when the system is no longer capable of dealing with the speed of technology." Governments, corporations, financial systems, and labour markets were built for a slower world, and these structures may struggle to adapt if AI continues advancing exponentially. Why Crypto Fits Into This Future Many people treat AI and crypto as competing investment themes, but Raoul counters that with a simple observation: if AI agents become economic actors, they will need ways to transact, store value, exchange assets, and coordinate with one another. In his view, blockchain networks provide the rails for this machine economy. AI agents will make payments, rebalance treasuries, exchange currencies, and interact with decentralised applications without human involvement. "The biggest user of DeFi and crypto payments will be AI agents." This idea dramatically expands crypto's potential market. Historically, investors have evaluated crypto adoption based on human users, but if billions of AI agents begin participating in economic activity, the addressable market becomes far larger than previously imagined. Why Most Investors Lose Despite discussing emerging technologies, one of Raoul's strongest lessons is remarkably old-fashioned. Patience. Throughout the conversation, he repeatedly challenges the assumption that successful investing requires constant trading. In fact, he believes the opposite. Crypto's volatility creates the illusion that active traders possess an edge, and large price swings make people believe they can outsmart markets. Yet most participants end up reacting emotionally to short-term moves while missing the larger trend. Raoul has experienced multiple crypto cycles since entering the market in 2013. His conclusion is that corrections, even a near 50% drop in Bitcoin’s price, are within expected ranges during long-term growth. "It's a nasty correction in a bull market." His broader framework remains simple. If the underlying forces driving AI adoption, monetary expansion, and blockchain adoption remain intact, temporary market declines become less significant, and "You would never sell if you don't have to." Owning the Infrastructure Layer One of Raoul's most distinctive ideas is that blockchain networks may allow ordinary people to own pieces of the infrastructure powering the next technological era. During previous technological revolutions, most individuals did not own meaningful portions of the underlying systems. They used the internet, but they did not own internet infrastructure. Similarly, they used digital platforms, but they did not participate directly in their value creation. Blockchain changes that dynamic. Raoul describes leading Layer 1 networks as a form of "universal basic equity." If future economic activity increasingly occurs on blockchain rails, token holders effectively own part of the infrastructure supporting that activity. So rather than attempting to predict every winning application, protocol, or startup, he prefers the simpler approach of owning the networks themselves. His belief is that a handful of major blockchain ecosystems will emerge as foundational infrastructure for the digital economy, much as dominant operating systems and cloud providers emerged during previous technological cycles. A Historic Moment Beyond investing, the conversation ultimately returns to a larger question. What does it mean to live through a period when humanity may no longer be the most intelligent entity on Earth? Raoul sees this transition as one of the most important moments in human history. We are witnessing the emergence of a new form of intelligence while simultaneously building the systems that will govern interactions between humans, machines, and capital. That future may arrive faster than most people expect.
