Delighted to meet with James Young, Vice President of Agriculture at @McCainUKIE to discuss their recently published report ‘The Sustainable Farming Dividend.’ Discussions highlighted that as global instability continues to strain supply chains, Demos’ modelling demonstrates that scaling sustainable farming is a critical national security priority. The report found that a transition to sustainable agriculture could see an estimated £31.6bn increase in farm profitability across the UK by 2050 and the generation of £56.3bn in natural capital by 2035, which is critical for delivering long-term economic growth. We also discussed their Farmdex Report - which clearly concludes that farmers and growers overwhelmingly agree that investment within the sector is essential – not just to survive, but to build a future and 96% say long-term investment is needed to secure Britain’s food supply. Regenerative agriculture is emerging as a beacon of hope: 77% see sustainable practices as essential, and those who have invested in them report higher optimism about the future. Farmers are asking for clarity, consistency, and a seat at the table. They want policy that supports innovation, trade that protects domestic agriculture, and public recognition of the role they play in national resilience. In my role as Shadow Farming Minister, it’s brilliant to be meeting as many people from across the sector as possible and its vital that we are learning more about how we can try and overcome the current financial challenges.

⚠️ Beware Starmer’s “EU Reset”… Labour is handing control of our food laws to the EU. Over 400 food regulations are expected to change, forcing UK businesses to make costly changes to supply chains and manufacturing processes. At a time when the economy is flatlining and families are already struggling with rising costs, the last thing Labour should be doing is making the weekly shop even more expensive. Instead, Keir Starmer is looking to reopen old divisions in a bid to appease his left-wing backbenchers and shore up his faltering premiership. The Government needs to put UK consumers and food producers first, not foreign farmers. That is why the @Conservatives would: - abolish the fertiliser tax - hold a rapid review into the packaging tax called the Extended Producer Responsibility scheme - scrap the Family Farm & Family Business Taxes - deliver our Cheap Power Plan to cut bills for us all including food producers. While Labour remains focused on revisiting the debates of the past, only the Conservatives, under new leadership, are focused on securing a stronger future.

I really don’t understand why it is taking so long - to say that Keighley and the wider Bradford District will be included as part of the National Grooming Gangs Inquiry. I will continue to keep pushing. On Monday 1st June at 16:30 - I will be speaking in Parliament - calling on the government to include Keighley and the wider Bradford District in the National Grooming Gangs Inquiry with immediate effect. The government must also take urgent action to increase the collection and transparency of data on individuals - including the nationality, ethnicity, immigration status and religion - of child sexual offenders responsible for group-based child sexual exploitation.

Very pleased to hear that today, the new Leader of Bradford Council has written to Baroness Longfield, the independent Chair of the National Grooming Gangs Inquiry joining my longstanding calls for the Bradford District to be included. This is very welcome news, and I thank Cllr Place for joining me in demanding the Bradford District is included. Child Sexual Exploitation and gang related grooming has haunted Keighley and the wider Bradford District for decades. Ever since being elected, I have continuously been calling for an inquiry, working with local victims and survivors such as Fiona Goddard and leading child abuse lawyers, like David Greenwood. So, after years of the previous Labour leader, Susan Hinchcliffe and her labour councillors blocking an inquiry from taking place at every opportunity, even voting down our Conservative Councillors call for an inquiry, I feel enthused that we finally we have a clear demand from the top of the council for openness, transparency and a desire to seek the truth about a heinous crime in which I am convinced there has been cover up. I will work with anyone who has the same end goal of achieving justice for our victims and survivors and holding those to account who have failed them. I only hope that Baroness Longfield and the Home Secretary hear our joint calls and commences an inquiry across Keighley and the Bradford District without delay. I will not stop.

Keir Starmer is handing Putin £1bn buying dirty Russian oil, while banning drilling of British oil in the North Sea. This is madness, morally and economically. We should back Ukraine and back our oil and gas industry in Aberdeen and beyond. That’s what @Conservatives would do.

The Chelsea Flower Show is the world’s most prestigious horticultural event, acting as the premier trendsetter for global garden design. The event provides an incredible global platform for the UK's £38 billion environmental horticulture and ornamental sector. Organised annually by the @The_RHS, this year’s Chelsea Flower Show highlighted the industry's vital role in climate resilience, biodiversity and sustainable practices. In my role as a Shadow DEFRA Minister, it was great to be invited along by the RHS, and the HTA to celebrate our horticultural and ornamental sector, but also to meet with the exhibitors, stakeholders and their members, to talk through current challenges and opportunities which need to be addressed to enable the sector to grow further and thrive. Key themes discussed were access to labour, affordable and sustainable energy supplies, plant protection, water security, productivity initiatives and investment, import controls for plants and plant products, improving supply chain relationships and improving the planning system. Above all, was a desire to see continuity and clarity in decision-making from government. These are all issues which I will continue to raise in Parliament through my as a Shadow Minister. It was a real privilege to be invited to the Show, and to meet with several Gold Award Winners. Their expertise, knowledge and experience was outstanding. Huge well done to all exhibitors for making this year’s event a huge success. The Chelsea Flower Show is an incredible showcase for highlighting the continuing importance of our UK ornamental and horticultural sector. Huge well done to all involved in organising this event.

An incredibly moving service. Today, I attended the Infected Blood - National Service of Recognition, Remembrance and Reflection at St Paul’s Cathedral. From 1970 to 1991, more than 30,000 people were infected with HIV and hepatitis C viruses through the use of contaminated blood, with some unintentionally passing it on to their partners and loved ones. Since then, more than 3,000 individuals have died. Today only around 250 of the 1,250 individuals infected with HIV are still living. I’ll never forget my first meeting with Clive Smith back in 2020, a constituent and now President of The Haemophilia Society UK who explained to me all the complexities associated with the infected blood scandal and the victims’ long fight for justice. Since that meeting, I have never stopped pushing both governments. As I said in the Infected Blood Debate in Parliament back in June 2023, two of our most valuable assets in life are our health and the time available to us. The British State took that away for many. Today’s service was a chance for all to come together. To remember and reflect. It was an incredibly moving service.

Brilliant to spend the day at Northern Ireland’s premier agricultural and agri-food event - The Balmoral Show, located just on the outskirts of Belfast. Organised by the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society (RUAS), the Balmoral Show attracts over 3,500 head of livestock, has over 500 trade stands and well over 100,000 visitors! Fantastic to speak with many Northern Irish farmers and growers, and industry representatives and those involved within the wider food supply chain about the importance of the UK’s food and farming sector, including driving growth in our rural economy, and how we can try and overcome the current financial challenges. There are many difficulties our farmers face, with the cost of inputs such as red diesel and fertiliser continuing to rise. But this is all on top of existing financial pressures, many of which have been increased through choices the UK Labour government has made. I am determined to fix it. The whole of our UK food and farming sector is vitally important and it is paramount that it is supported by all. Huge thanks to the Northern Ireland’s Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust for asking me to speak at their annual reception. It was also brilliant to catch up with organisations which included Dale Farm, the largest UK farmer-owned dairy cooperative. ABP, one of the biggest beef processors in the UK and Ireland. Pilgrim’s Europe, who operate fully integrated poultry livestock systems across the UK and Europe. Ulster Farmers' Union, BASC, Rural Support and The Farmers Journal. Great to speak with so many people who have such incredible willpower, determination and passion to drive our agricultural sector forward.
