Every protocol that promised to bring TradFi on-chain between 2021 and 2022 is now competing with BlackRock’s BUIDL. That’s an uncomfortable reality. Because many of those teams had four years to build what BlackRock built in roughly twelve months. The question isn’t whether they built good technology. Many of them did. The question is why the market ultimately rewarded distribution over technology. ● The Original Tokenization Thesis The first generation of RWA protocols emerged with a compelling vision: > Bring real-world assets on-chain > Create programmable collateral > Expand access to private credit > Modernize capital markets The industry produced serious builders: > @centrifuge > @goldfinch_fi > @maplefinance > @OndoFinance Collectively, these teams spent years building infrastructure while attracting millions in venture funding. The assumption was simple: Build the rails first. Institutions will eventually arrive. That assumption is now being tested. ● What @BlackRock Actually Proved BUIDL launched in March 2024. By 2026, it had grown to roughly $2.4B-$2.9B in assets. That growth didn’t happen because BlackRock invented better tokenization technology. Tokenized funds already existed. On-chain Treasuries already existed. The technology stack wasn’t new. The distribution stack was. BlackRock arrived with something crypto-native teams spent years trying to build: > institutional trust > allocator relationships > regulatory credibility > established distribution channels The technology wasn’t the advantage. Distribution was. ● Infrastructure Vs. Distribution This is the uncomfortable reality. Many RWA protocols spent years building infrastructure. Few built distribution. Technology can be developed by a small team. Distribution requires trust, relationships, and regulatory credibility. BlackRock already had all three. BUIDL wasn’t starting from zero. It simply plugged tokenization into an existing distribution network. The result was predictable. Institutional capital followed the institution it already trusted. ● What Crypto Underestimated The uncomfortable question isn’t why BlackRock succeeded. The uncomfortable question is why nobody else built the distribution layer first. Crypto-native teams spent years solving tokenization. BlackRock arrived and solved distribution. Those are not the same thing. One creates infrastructure. The other attracts capital. And capital consistently chooses distribution over infrastructure. ● The New Competitive Laye BUIDL didn’t prove crypto-native RWA protocols were wrong. It proved tokenization was only half the equation. The real challenge was distribution. For years, the industry focused on infrastructure first. BlackRock showed that institutional distribution was the harder, and more important, piece.
