New statement from Scott Pelley: “Last month, 60 Minutes lost its DNA when our entire senior leadership and two of our best on-air correspondents were cruelly fired without cause. Good people were silenced because they stood up for our audience. They stood for fairness against the forces of political bias; they stood for professionalism against chaos.   For my part, new management has instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story. I’ve been told to include assertions that are unverified. To date, in every case, I have managed to ignore these instructions or refuse them. Recently, politicians have been invited to choose correspondents for interviews on the broadcast. Giving politicians control over 60 Minutes interviews is not how this is done. Finally, incompetence and unprofessionalism in the new management have wreaked havoc. In a case involving one of my stories, the entire program came within 19 minutes of not getting on the air at all.   At 60 Minutes, we have fought harder than anyone knows to save the program that became an American icon. We owed that to our millions of viewers. I am deeply moved by the thousands of wishes we have received to “keep up the good fight.” Most of the men and women of CBS News are still in that fight. But now the collapse of values at the top has become untenable. The leadership of 60 Minutes is no longer recognizable. The principles I hold dear are gone, and so I must leave as well.”

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the DHS Inspector General just opened an audit into a $38 billion warehouse-to-detention scheme that Kristi Noem and her top adviser Corey Lewandowski rammed through. ICE bought 11 vacant warehouses in a matter of months, paying 11 to 13 percent above market value. The properties weren’t even zoned for detention. No working plumbing for thousands of detainees. But Noem and Lewandowski pressured ICE to open them by year’s end anyway. The result? At least $1 billion already spent on nine facilities. Nearly 50 contractors paid $1.7 billion since Trump took office. Companies with zero immigration detention experience suddenly winning massive federal contracts. One firm that didn’t even exist until June 2024 got a $6 million DHS contract this January. Noem is gone. Lewandowski is gone. But the bill is still landing on the taxpayer, and the IG investigation is just getting started. Accountability cannot end when the perpetrators walk out the door. Every contract needs scrutiny. Every dollar needs to be traced. Every official who steered money to inexperienced contractors needs to answer under oath. wsj.com/politics/polic…

On Memorial Day, we pay tribute to the brave men and women in uniform who gave their lives for this country that we love. It is a debt we can never fully repay, but we must never stop trying. I’ll always be grateful to our fallen heroes and their families, whose sacrifice reminds us of what it means to live for something greater than ourselves.

Not enough people are talking about this. A Florida airport was renamed after Donald Trump. He walked away with the trademark, the licensing rights, and a deal that lets him profit off every piece of merchandise sold there. But the story of how he got it is even worse. County staff told commissioners that rejecting the name change would put state transportation funding at risk. DeSantis has already removed state attorneys and school board members who dared to cross him. That is the reality the Democratic commissioner who cast the deciding vote was living in when she made her choice: hand Donald Trump control of a public airport or watch Florida Republicans strip funding from the very people she was elected to represent. That is absolutely insane. May 1942. The fake water shortage that sank four Japanese carriers. By mid-May 1942, the US Navy had a problem. They had broken into the Japanese fleet operational code, JN-25, well enough to read fragments of it. They could see Admiral Yamamoto assembling something enormous. Four fleet carriers. A diversionary attack against the Aleutians. A landing force. The target was identified in every transmission by a single two-letter codeword: AF. Joseph Rochefort, the eccentric cryptanalyst who ran Station HYPO out of a windowless basement in Pearl Harbor known as "the Dungeon," was certain AF was Midway. He worked 20-hour shifts in a red smoking jacket and bedroom slippers because the basement was freezing. He survived on coffee and sandwiches passed in through the door. Washington disagreed. The Navy's main code-breaking section, OP-20-G, thought AF was probably the US west coast, possibly Hawaii itself, possibly even the Panama Canal. Admiral King in Washington trusted his own people. Admiral Nimitz at Pearl Harbor trusted Rochefort. One of them had to be wrong. Rochefort's deputy, Jasper Holmes, came up with the trick. Midway was instructed to broadcast a radio message in plain, uncoded English. The garrison's freshwater distillation plant, the message said, had broken down. They were running short of water and requested an emergency tanker. The message was fiction. The plant was fine. Two days later, American listening stations intercepted a Japanese intelligence transmission, encrypted in JN-25, reporting back to fleet headquarters that "AF is short of fresh water." AF was Midway. Confirmed. Nimitz now knew where, when, and with what. He positioned his three available carriers, Enterprise, Hornet, and the half-wrecked Yorktown, in ambush 325 miles northeast of the island. Yorktown had been hit at the Battle of the Coral Sea two weeks earlier and was supposed to need 90 days in dry dock. Pearl Harbor's shipyard repaired her in 72 hours. On June 4, 1942, in roughly six minutes between 10:22 and 10:28 AM, American dive bombers caught three Japanese carriers, Akagi, Kaga, and Soryu, with their decks loaded with fuel and ordnance for a strike they were about to launch. All three were burning hulks by lunchtime. Hiryu was sunk that evening. Japan lost four fleet carriers, a heavy cruiser, 248 aircraft, and over 3,000 men, including most of the irreplaceable veteran naval aviators who had attacked Pearl Harbor six months earlier. Joseph Rochefort was rewarded with reassignment. His rivals in Washington saw to it that he was pushed out of cryptanalysis entirely and given command of a floating dry dock in San Francisco. He spent the rest of the war repairing ships. He received the Distinguished Service Medal for Midway in 1986, ten years after he died.
