What I don’t understand is what the pause conditions would be. “Woah dude, this seems weird” is hard to operationalize in words, so the decision comes down to vibes. Once you create the button, there will be a temptation to press it, and there may not be a “resume” button.
having the mechanisms to slow down if needed will reduce anxiety overall and may even improve the rate of progress in the timelines where everything turns out to be good
I think an AI pause is a bad idea. Isn't mythos their most aligned model ever? This feels like it will be self correcting, if RSI hits itll have better ideas for handling RSI than we do
Anthropic is calling for top AI labs to weigh slowing the pace of development, suggesting that AI systems are advancing so rapidly that they may soon be able to improve themselves without human intervention in ways that could pose societal risks. on.wsj.com/4ulkmFh
@tszzl I don't think it's a good development. I continue to think that RSI is an overrated risk vector due to data and compute bottlenecks, and that slowing down AI would accomplish little at enormous cost.
.@pmarca and @a16z should be forced to not sell any bitcoin:native until everyone else has had a chance to sell first.
They whined like little bitches that the government wouldn’t let them make crypto casinos so let them show us how much they believe in crypto.
Not really the same thing. Obsidian would be Google Docs for markdown if its Preview mode were more like editable Read mode. Preview mode so janky.
I don’t care about markdown. I just want the editing experience of Google Docs / Dropbox Paper but save the output to an open/hackable format. Markdown just happens to work well but that’s not what I (and I suspect other people) care about.
@DominicJPino@PostOpinions If nobody actually uses it then there should be no problem with taxing equity- or margin-backed loans as ordinary income, with like a $1M-per-year non deferrable standard deduction.
@scaling01 What do you think are the chances the anti-AI crowd or doomers successfully get USG to slow down AI and push out AGI by like 5, 10, 50 years?
This WSJ headline is a bit misleading. Anthropic said a slowdown or pause would be nice "if it were possible" but that it's not possible since it's not globally verifiable, so Anthropic will study what mechanisms might make it possible. Better than nothing, but still..
Many are saying…
Installing brakes is a no brainer (figure out how to do a verifiable slowdown if needed), which is different from shooting bullets at random parts of the engine (banning datacenters in different states)
Should AI progress speed up, slow down, or stay the same?
In my latest blog post (link in next tweet), I argue that no one really knows, myself included, but that we should install brakes just in case they're needed.
@New_AI_Safety@DavidSKrueger Home building and nuclear energy were slowed to a crawl in the US.
And slowing those two things down only had positive effects.
Thank goodness we escaped the horror or dense housing and cheap nuclear energy.
