A modern video game can render billions of triangles per second. Meanwhile, add 1,000 divs to a webpage and suddenly we're in performance-budget territory. I'm sure there's a good technical explanation for this.

Thank you, everyone, deeply for your interest in my writings about the comics/manga industry. As I have mentioned before, after an incident that occurred around Christmas last year, I withdrew from many things in my life and spent a period in seclusion. I was heartbroken by the suffering that cartoonists and artists endure. However, the warm words of a great senior mangaka and many other people encouraged me to stand up again and keep moving forward. At that point, I decided that for the next three months I would dedicate myself to one goal: "Let's work for the future of comics around the world." During those three months, I worked on many different projects and initiatives. Those efforts extended not only across Japan and Korea, but also from Africa to North America. I wanted to give something—however small—to people who love manga. A gift with a simple message written on it: "Someone believes in you. Someone believes in your potential." The first article in my comics industry series was written on the final day of those three months. I couldn't sleep that night, so I simply sat down and wrote. Although the post received a great deal of support on X, I honestly expected that to be the end of it. But then something surprising happened. The response came not only from readers, but also from people in government, the media, and the comics industry itself. For years, I had worked hard on YouTube without seeing that kind of reaction. Yet a post written for X in the early hours of the morning generated exactly that response. To me, those reactions—from government, industry, and the press—were the very gift I had hoped to give all of you. That is why, despite being busy, I decided to continue writing a little more about the comics industry. And so I wrote several more essays. My approach is simple. I write each topic from beginning to end in a single sitting. Then my friend, Steve slowly translate and we post it one by one. The essay on globalization, for example, was originally written on May 14. I simply divided it into sections and posted it over ten days. The essay on piracy manga that I am currently posting was actually completed on May 2. I have been translating and publishing it over the course of eight days. When you finish reading these essays, I believe you will realize a few things. You will realize that Steve and I were already confronting these questions decades ago. That we spent many years thinking about them, researching them, and searching for answers. And perhaps most importantly, that we have always cared deeply about everyone who loves comics. You will come to understand that. Neither Steve nor I are extraordinary people. We are deeply imperfect. Our lives have been filled with mistakes, regrets, and countless moments of uncertainty. Even today, we are still searching for answers. We have not found an answer that satisfies everyone. What we are searching for is simply an answer that can help everyone. And of this, I am certain. We have never stopped trying. Thank you very much!

because it doesn't have "zero impact" when you're building apps, industrial systems, backends, that sort of thing, you know what you're building. somewhere there exists a document that, if the links are followed, details every single thing that needs to happen games don't. you discover them as you go in a drill down because the nebulous goal of "fun" is not something built to spec that means pivoting, careful management of what gets committed to, what changes, how it changes, etc. how you build something is 100x more important because of your confidence level of whether it's an experiment, whether it will change, whether it's a product necessity whether the feature will get dropped, HOW it will need to change and how quickly understanding what the designers are likely to do affects the way in which you code so you can tweak, adjust, pivot, as well as knowing which specific juniors may have to maintain and what and how you need to commit to readability for "if this breaks at 3am" developing in non-games has a sense finality to code that games will never have and that's okay, but it does mean that what makes 'good' code is very different. if i know my designers and i know the kind of shit they come up with i know precisely where to put levers, how to encapsulate the code, preempt what can be asked for and how they'll ask for it and be able to ship their changes in minutes rather than having to rebuild anything this is vital for achieving for performance and organizational development velocity at the same time

“On Readers Who Read Manga for Free” This time, I would like to talk about something a little sensitive—no, in fact, something extremely sensitive. That is the issue of readers around the world who consume pirated manga(manga piracy). There are many ways we can think about the problem of “reading manga through piracy overseas.” 1. So is reading manga piracy illegal? Surprisingly, in many cases, it is not(!). But is that really so surprising? Let’s think about what “illegal” actually means for a moment. For something to be considered illegal, it must violate the laws of the country where the person resides. (Although the reality is more complex, let’s simplify it for now.) For reading pirated foreign manga to be illegal, that country must be a member of an international copyright system based on the TRIPS Agreement. After joining such an international copyright system, the country must also revise its domestic copyright laws to align with global standards. Only then does reading pirated foreign works—such as manga and webtoons from Japan and Korea—become illegal in that country. If a country has not done so, then for its citizens, reading pirated versions of foreign manga is not “illegal.” In other words, it is not a criminal act. South Korea joined the international copyright system in 1988. Before that, copying and distributing Japanese manga without authorization was legally permissible. China joined in 2004. Japan, meanwhile, joined as early as 1899. Yes—1899. Even today, there are many countries in the world that are not part of the international copyright system. For citizens of those countries, reading pirated Japanese manga is not a crime. Let me repeat this clearly: it is not illegal. And from the perspective of a creator, this is a very painful truth. However, there is no universal obligation for every country in the world to join the international copyright system. That is a matter of national sovereignty and choice. But still, we may have a better solution. At least, I have been thinking about a possible approach to this issue. For now, I will continue developing this idea a little further. To be contined.

Nearly every problem we’re seeing in our culture is downstream of the decline in reading. The fact that only 13 percent of kids read for pleasure is a nationwide emergency. There is no more pressing issue than getting kids back into reading.

Been feeling bleak for the past week after I read an essay saying the market for middle-grade books has collapsed because kids can no longer read them. Two long-time publishers of middle-grades have shuttered, with more to come. We don’t appreciate what a crisis this is. +

NGL I am getting really tired of seeing people excuse AI because "Sandfall used it for Expedition 33 and got away with it, so it's fine". Do you all have working memories? They didn't "get away with it" they got roasted, for weeks, until the remaining AI asset was taken out...
